Archives for the month of: August, 2022

Newton’s famous law states that a body at rest stays at rest and a body in motion will stay in motion until some external force acts upon it. With our 24/7 always on, hyper-connected, overachieving, digital info-media world, most 21st century Americans live in a flow of perpetual momentum with no end in sight.

Neither extreme is good, so to balance ourselves we must consciously and continually self-regulate and impose as a rejuvenating or preventative measure the act of stopping all activity from time to time. Yes, I said Stop. All. Activity.

I think pretty much all the time, about practical and bigger picture things, reflecting on the state of the world, my life, my work — analyzing, understanding, observing and being as aware as possible every waking moment, and of course I am not immune to the stresses that everyday life and being human entails. This past weekend I “slept” for almost an entire day. But not due of lack of zzzz’s, or being sick, depressed or eating bad food, but simply because after everything I’ve been dealing with the past month or two, my mind, emotions and body needed me to temporarily shut down. I had nothing pressing going on, which the wisdom in my body knew and said to me, as it does every now and then, Time for a rest.

Just like bears that hibernate each winter, we need to take a periodic pause — especially after or during a busy, challenging or stressful period — to let our bodies be still on all levels so we can reconnect, regroup and emerge refreshed and re-energized to our lives and the tasks at hand. That means (gasp!) disconnect from technology and interaction with other people, if possible, so as not to expend any physical, mental or emotional juice.

You can sleep or not sleep, but there should be no distractions or even sound if you can swing it. And no thinking, no reading, no writing. And no guilt. Just luxuriate in the nothingness. Schedule and treat it as if it were a doctor’s appointment or trip to a resort spa — because it is that crucial to your physical and mental health. In other words, why not give your body and mind a break before they break down on you?

Our society promotes getting it all done all the time, which can take its toll when not interspersed with some serious downtime, which most folks only allow themselves when things have gotten so bad they are physically ill. Keep in mind that even though you might be getting enough sleep and eating right and don’t have the flu, when you’re dealing with ongoing stress, you burn a different type of energy, which needs to be replenished with rest. And resting is different from relaxing…but if you can’t rest, then relaxing is better than nothing!

Because I’m pretty good at daily maintenance, I am generally healthy and balanced (including a weekly 24-hour no-computer usage rule) so I know when it’s time to heed the call in order to nip anything else in the bud. (And hey, most of the news, entertainment, activity, tweets etc.you would be “missing” are non-essential, irrelevant and often nonsensical anyway — so really, let it go!)

Stress is inevitable, it’s how we manage it that counts, and rest plays a big part. Need help putting on the brakes? Give me a buzz and I can be the external force that gets the ball moving or the hand that stops you in your track, so you can get back on the right one…

While walking down the street after a bizarre week of odd “coincidences” and uncanny timings, I happened to look up and notice the announcement board of a synagogue with this quote by feminist/activist/author Robin Morgan, “Only she who attempts the absurd can achieve the impossible.”

One definition of the word absurd is “inconsistent with reason or logic or common sense,” which means that any decisions or actions deemed as such perhaps come from a place that we can’t always understand, but know is from somewhere deep within us.

Our most popular presidents had a bit of that going on…George Washington’s advisors seriously questioned his determination to cross the frozen Delaware, and he intuitively knew how to present himself as a leader for this new country; Abraham Lincoln’s life is filled with examples of how he went against conventional wisdom and popular opinion. Both men defied the odds by listening to their own conscience, inner voice and moral compass, and because of that became the great men we honor today.

Part of maturing is learning how to trust your own gut despite any outside influences. While it can be helpful to get advice, when we are honest with ourselves, we are usually our own best counsel. Others might not know who we really are or may not have our best interests at heart. And I’m sure we can all remember times when we’ve dealt with the consequences of not heeding the wisdom of our gut.

My guess is that Adam Sandler trusts his intuition as to what his audience thinks is funny or not regardless of what the Hollywood suits might say, and from his start back in the SNL days, he expressed a unique kind of silly humor that had yet to be considered commercially viable. Well, we all know how that turned out!

When I meet with clients, often I am simply validating and confirming what they already know themselves but were too embarrassed, in denial, doubtful or repressed about to pursue or even admit.

If when a complete stranger in less than two hours, without you specifically divulging it, tells you that the ‘crazy’ idea you have, that thing you always wanted to do, the life that you always dreamed of, is exactly the direction you should be going in based on the dots I’ve connected, Just Go With It — it’s the green light you’ve been waiting for to produce that smash box office hit starring none other than YOU!

The acorn does not become an oak tree overnight. ~ Me* (*Not sure where I got it from, but have adopted it as my own; here is the video I made talking about it as well.)

On August 4, I got a message via LinkedIn from a client I had worked with over a decade ago and hadn’t heard from in about six years. It was like the Universe was giving me an early anniversary present, since August 17 marks my 15th year as a professional coach. Here’s what she said:

I’ve been thinking about you recently because I just launched my own law firm (with a partner) focusing on renewable energy and real estate. … I’ve been working exclusively in renewables for the last 10 years and I think about you often because so much of it is because of you and the positive seeds you planted in my head that I could do it if I set my mind to it!

I just got an email from a client congratulating me on the launch of the firm and saying I deserved it because I was one of the best renewable energy attorneys she’s ever worked with. I was so chuffed! [FYI “chuffed” is British slang for pleased/delighted, I had to Google it.] Anyway – just wanted to thank you again for being such an amazing support back in the dark days of me having no idea how to get where I wanted to get! You are incredible at what you do 🙂

Whenever I get messages like these, I feel like a proud Mama! And her story perfectly demonstrates three of my working principles and theories in how I help my clients as a holistic career coach and personal growth expert:

  1. Do what you love, what you are passionate about; it’s in your heart and spirit for a reason. Take whatever steps necessary that feel right inside your gut and know they are bringing you one step closer to your ideal. And keep in mind that what you love doesn’t have to be your career, but in that case don’t choose a job that prevents you from doing what you love!
  2. The perfect job for you might not even exist today. For example, 10 years ago the whole renewable/clean energy world was much smaller and very niche with limited opportunities. Things are obviously very different today …
  3. Patience is a virtue. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and is often more important than the destination. Trust the process; as long as you are aligned with who you are and your own organic unfoldment, the right opportunities will show up – in time and on time. And yes, an acorn doesn’t become an oak tree overnight.

I have lived that exact advice in my own career path and journey, since I can only practice what I preach! When I started working with clients back in August 2007, coaching wasn’t really a thing – I didn’t even really know what to call myself, since my perception of what a “coach” was at the time didn’t seem to fit me.

I just talked to people and did what I did naturally and intuitively to get to the root of people’s stuckness – using what I like to call my “x-ray vision and supersonic hearing” combined with my exposure to many different industries, cultures and philosophies – and was able to provide a variety of perspectives, tools and resources to help them get on track and find clarity, balance and direction in work and life.

Fifteen years later I still do this. I have no idea what other coaches do – nor do I have any training or certifications – and I’m not a therapist, although people have told me I’ve saved them thousands of dollars in therapy!

But the proof is in the pudding (yes, this essay is filled with clichés and truisms …). Because of the feedback I received, I just kept doing it and learning by doing, honing my skills working with an incredibly diverse clientele. And it was somewhat an initiation by fire, since not long after I began we had the Great Recession, but because I started when I did, I was at least set up to start helping all those folks who felt lost over those next couple of years. #divinetiming

Walking a truly authentic, aligned path is the road less traveled for a reason, though. There are a lot of unknowns, risks, twists and turns, and like anything else, it ain’t always easy! It is a commitment to personal growth on the daily that requires building self-confidence, self-worth, and deep trust in oneself and something greater than oneself. We all have the areas we succeed in and others that are more challenging and are opportunities for even bigger growth. I am finally starting to address some of mine in a deeper way because for whatever the reason, now is the time and you can’t always do everything at once!

I wrote about another client at my 11th anniversary here, who since then now has a second child, was promoted to director level, and just made a big move to his dream location! There are many more stories from the hundreds (probably over a thousand, actually) clients I’ve worked with over the years, some I know of and others I don’t – I would love to hear yours, so please feel free to reach out and/or connect on LinkedIn to let me know how my coaching has helped get you where you are today.

If you are interested in learning more about my coaching journey, here are some essays that talk about my 10-year anniversary, connecting the dots of my journey, my 10,000 hours, testimonials, my style. And you can see some recent fun Client Love on the highlight reel on my IG.

Thanks for indulging me. If you’ve been here awhile, you know this is not a typical essay for me, but as an act of self-love I wanted to take some time to reflect and celebrate myself! Let it serve as inspiration to stay the course, have patience and make your dreams a reality. And of course be sure to give me a buzz if you need help in any way 😉

I recently read that “a person’s success in life can usually be measured by the amount of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have.”

Many people begin the year by starting a new exercise or other routine that can have them feeling sore or out of sorts, and doing this with your patterns of interaction and communication can also reap rewards. Like any muscle, growth happens outside of your comfort zone.

Maybe that uncomfortable conversation needs to be with your boss, that contact for your dream gig, your partner, a parent, your neighbor, that cute guy/girl you’ve been eyeing, that celebrity you’d love to talk with, or just putting yourself in a foreign social situation. But it’s also that honest conversation you need to have with yourself in order to face the reality of your life as it is versus the way you’d like it to bebecause the one common denominator in your life is YOU, and taking responsibility for why it is the way it is is paramount, if not always pleasant.

The good news is that by chatting with yourself on a regular basis, you can know what changes you need to make to move your life closer to your ideal!

Not quite feeling it? I say, “Fake it till you make it” and remind you that, like Einstein said, “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

So if things aren’t going your way, why not try a slightly different approach from your usual MO? Or you can go whole hog and be like George Costanza in the Seinfeld episode where he does the exact opposite of what he would normally do, to some hilarious effects and success!

So this year resolve to have those challenging conversations, not care what people think, try new things without worrying whether you’ll look foolish, stand out in a crowd, and be OK with not being perfect. (Well, those were some of mine… just insert whatever makes you uncomfortable!)

Wondering how to get from here to there? Give me a buzz and I’ll be your personal trainer to stretch those inner muscles, help you have that heart-to-heart with yourself, and make your discomfort as comfortable as possible along the way!
